RUNNINGCOLUMN,ROBROSE
When
Pat Benson was last seen competing in a local road race,
he
was so far ahead of the field that his pursuers lost sight of
him,
took a wrong turn and passed into oblivion. That was at the
Foxboro
Y 5K in 2004. Many months later, the Foxboro resident
has
not forgotten how to turn in dominating performances. At
Sunday's
Billy Kelly races, Benson took the helm with a
blistering
first mile and romped to an easy 15:51 win in the 5K.
18:24.
five
mile race (27:44) and
the
women's five mile (31:04), then ran home.
Running
shirtless with facial hair and a headband, Benson, a
Feehan
senior that tore up the streets of Foxboro in the summer
of
2004. The 5K competition was a little stiffer on Sunday but
the
results were identical. Benson and Hopkinton's Keiron
Tumbleton
quickly separated from the 352 runner field, the
largest
in the race's history, turning it into a two man race.
"I
wanted to take it out fast," said Tumbleton.
"Good day, flat
course
and I took it out." The first mile was an impressive
4:40,
which gave Benson a 20 yard lead but raised concerns
on
being
able to stay there. "Definitely went out way too fast," he
said.
"I heard 4:40; not good at all. I hadn't run in a week.
Felt
fresh. I just finished cross country at
our
last meet last weekend. We're between seasons and I'm just
looking
for a race."
Tumbleton
was able to stabilize the gap until the race
midpoint.
"I was getting tired and he was either maintaining or
stretching,"
he said. "I was pushing it then but I couldn't
bring
him in. Just not enough time. Kudos to him - he was
strong
and
smooth all the way." Benson was still wary of the 'older'
Tumbleton,
a lesson learned from the past when a savvy veteran
took
away the prize. "I know there was an older guy that beat me
the
last time out," he said. "He tried to take away my speed at
the
end so I was trying to maintain my pace. Luckily I held on.
I just
tried to plug away. I felt strong. I peaked ... I'm at
the
end of my season."
Mathew's
only female companionship in her pursuit of a second
consecutive Billy Kelly 5K title, came from Lynn Johnson, the
women's
five mile winner. "We were together until the turnaround
so
she went out fast," Mathews said. "I went out at 5:47, the
first
mile so it wasn't slow." Because both races follow the
same
route, runners don't know where their competition may come
from
until the 5K turnaround at a mile and a half. When Johnson
went
straight, Mathews had clear sailing. "I took the second
mile
easy," she said. "Slowed down a notch, then
picked up. I
wasn't
aiming for a fast time. I was aiming for a good workout.
A
little faster than a tempo run but not quite race. I did a ten
miler
on Saturday and today I wanted to stretch it out."
The
layout of the course also created uncertainty for the five
mile
racers. "I went out pretty hard but there were two guys and
I
wasn't sure whether they were in the 5K or five mile," said
Nephew.
"Keiron Tumbleton, I
recognized him. I thought he might
be
in the five miler because he's an older guy and a lot of the
younger
kids do the 5K. The two guys, him and the winner of the
5K,
took off and I was far behind at the turnaround. I went
through
the mile at 5:06 and wasn't close." Nephew continued on
myself.
I backed off a little because 5:06 is a little quick for
me
considering my training right now. I tried to maintain pace
but
it seemed like everyone slowed down coming back." Second and
third
place finishers, Ben Coyle of
of
Dighton were in awe on how Nephew made such short work of
their
efforts. "One guy was way out front. I never even saw the
guy.
He was so far ahead." they said in chorus.
Nephew
usually doesn't compete at distances in single digits.
"I
have done a lot of marathons and 50K's," he said. "The trail
season
is over so if I don't have any races, I get stale. It
keeps
you busy."
Johnson
did a three mile warm-up prior to the five mile race
but
that didn't deter her from running stride for stride with
the
top woman in the 5K. "I knew she (Mathews) was running the
5K,
so I said I might as well go out hard and see how long I can
hold
it," she said. "It was a little too hard." Not too hard to
derail
her winning by a four minute margin. But her running day
was
not over. Shortly after the race, Johnson headed west for
another
six miles and home.
