*****Attention Relay Fans!!******
It's almost time to defend our hard earned Club Championship trophy at the Marshfield Relay.  This year there will be more teams involved in the race to catch the flying Wamp/Betty's in the marathon relay. Make sure you put July 7 on your calendar as we will be parading into Marshfield, Challenge Cup in hand to take on all comers.

Those of you who don't know about this, or couldn't make last years event...it's a 26 person marathon relay on the track in Marshfield with each team member running 1 mile. We need a minimum of 10 Betty's for the team but based on last years response, this will be no problem. As an added incentive, we are bringing back our DEA agent (Mr Boston & Louisville sub 2:57 marathon man) from southern parts. I also hear that there are 2-3 teams "gunnin" to take OUR trophy.  We will also be looking to return to Duxbury beach after the race for sun & fun for those who can make it so we need your commitment asap.  All the particulars can be found at www.marshfield.net/roadrunners then scroll down to the relay.

You can print the application, fill it out and either drop it off at DB Sports with your $8.00 or give to any of the board members but let me know as quickly as you can as spots will fill up fast. You can also email me at jimmor2@gmail.com

Border to Border Recap:

The mission was to reclaim the title from Team Awesome.  Mission accomplished.  The Elite Wamps overcame some stiff competition from the youngsters from Seekonk(and from PWOTY's navigational skills) to hit the tape in 3:02.

Bob Eaton gets the "guts" award for hammering leg 1; despite a pretty long stint on the sidelines coming up.  Get well soon.  Paul Powell was next and propelled the Wamps into 2nd place with just under 6 minute splits.

Mike Ferrari was next and after the race director stated; "A guy named Ferrari has to be fast"  Mike delivered; making up 3 minutes in a 3.4 mile leg.  He also escaped injury when the young lady from team Awesome kicked at him and tried to run him into the guardrail.  Deff a Betty-in-training.

Leg 4 is where the rivalry started to percolate.  Don Burke and a young lad took off neck and neck.  The lad was able to edge Don at the end and turned and gave him the "gun show".  Too bad team Awesome didn't know that the cagey Wamps had saved their big guns for the meat of the race.

Ben Coyle destroyed his runner.  Leaving him weeping after a 5:25 first mile.  Chris Elgar poured it on; racing up the Eastside hills like a mountaiin goat.  Anthony; agitated at getting to his leg late after a tour of Pawtucket; took it out on the course.  He effectively ended the race; handing a 5 minute lead to PWOTY with 2.5 to go.

The Betty/Wamp team gelled flawlessly.  Killa Miller brought them home in fine fashion.  Although Jim will be fined for wearing unliscenced WAMP gear.  Brian Mulligan and Kevin Downey are deff recovered after winter months on the shelf.  K2 and Amy Strong turned in their usual solid performances.  Fitzy and Jim did just as much damage to the cooler as they did to the course; which is impressive if you saw their splits.

Special note to Ron "B team" Farkash; who ran the whole thing faster than 2/3 of the field.
To quote the late great Chris Farley; "I have seen a lot of things in my day...but that was AWESOME!!!"

Shout out to team Laplante; PWOTY predicts we have 2 years before they blow right by us.  The kids are growing up fast; and the vets aren't slowing down.

Letter from the President

Welcome to the website of the Wampanoag Road Runners. Founded in 1984 by a few local runners looking for company in the area on their runs, the club has now evolved into a varied group of runners stretching from the Attleboro/Mansfield area all the way into Rhode Island and several states beyond. The Wampanoag club is open to runners of all abilities, from the recreational runner to the serious competitor. Our club members participate in a wide variety of races throughout the area, as well as many team competitions.

Among the many benefits that come with membership in our club is the opportunity to receive lottery entries to the Boston Marathon each year along with bus transportation to and from the marathon on race day. We have bi-monthly newsletters which will be incorporated into our website, professionally coached track workouts from May thru October, along with Wednesday night fun runs and Sunday morning training runs which include marathon training sessions. In addition, we are introducing our own Grand Prix series of races with awards to top finishers. Finally, for the social minded, we have both a summer pool party along with a year end Christmas social.

On behalf of the Wampanoag Road Runners, I would like to thank you for your interest in our club and look forward to seeing you on the roads. If you have any questions, please email me. (Just click on my name below!)

Sincerely,

Sean McNamara
